Checking the test vehicle before the appointment
A calm test drive starts with a suitable vehicle.
A calm test drive starts with a suitable vehicle. Check the current NSW test-vehicle requirements early enough to resolve a problem without rushing. A clean interior alone does not establish that the car is acceptable for the test.
Understand the situation
Review the official vehicle checklist and discuss the actual car with the person providing it. Confirm that you can operate its controls and that any required equipment is suitable. Warning lights, tyre concerns or an unfamiliar parking brake deserve attention before test day.
Before you practise
- Confirm the booked vehicle and its availability
- Review the official test-vehicle requirements
- Familiarise yourself with lights, demister and parking brake
A focused practice session
At your final preparation lesson, rehearse the vehicle setup and identify the controls the testing officer may ask about. If something appears defective, have it assessed appropriately before the appointment. Keep an alternative booking plan realistic rather than assuming another car will feel identical.
A situation to discuss
If the proposed test car differs from your usual lesson car, plan a familiarisation session rather than assuming all automatics feel the same. Check the selector, parking brake, visibility and controls while stationary, then assess ordinary driving with instruction. If the car has a mechanical concern, resolve suitability through the appropriate channel. A last-minute replacement can introduce both a vehicle problem and an unfamiliar-control problem.
