Managing the space around a large truck
Large vehicles can restrict your view and require more room to manoeuvre.
Large vehicles can restrict your view and require more room to manoeuvre. Give yourself time to understand their movement instead of treating them like a larger passenger car. Space is especially valuable near turns and intersections.
Understand the situation
Read the NSW guidance about sharing roads with heavy vehicles. Your instructor can help you identify visibility limits, turning room and the risks of sitting alongside a truck. If you cannot see beyond the vehicle ahead, adjust your following position and gap safely.
Before you practise
- Avoid lingering beside a heavy vehicle unnecessarily
- Allow room for its turning path
- Preserve a view of the road and signals ahead
A focused practice session
During a suitable lesson, observe a truck's position from a safe following distance and discuss what it prevents you from seeing. Plan your own lane and speed early. Use the debrief to identify a moment when more space made the situation easier to understand.
A situation to discuss
A truck starts a turn and its path occupies more space than a passenger car's would. An apparently open strip beside it may be part of the room needed for the turn. Hold back rather than squeezing through. During the debrief, identify the truck's signals, position and movement that gave you early information. Learning to recognise those cues is more useful than waiting for the remaining gap to become visibly too small.
