Planning navigation without using a learner's mobile phone
A familiar phone-navigation habit can conflict with NSW learner restrictions.
A familiar phone-navigation habit can conflict with NSW learner restrictions. Plan the route and the communication before driving. A phone holder or hands-free connection does not by itself make phone use lawful for a learner.
Understand the situation
NSW learner, P1 and P2 drivers face broad restrictions on mobile-phone use, including hands-free functions. Check the current official guidance for the exact rules and limited exceptions. Discuss a lawful navigation arrangement with your instructor, and make any necessary route changes while safely parked.
Before you practise
- Review the restrictions that apply to your licence
- Agree on route directions before moving
- Put the phone away so it does not compete for attention
A focused practice session
During a supervised lesson, practise following clear spoken directions from your instructor without interacting with a phone. If the route changes, maintain safe driving and use a suitable parked pause to re-plan. The learning goal is to manage directions without letting navigation distract you.
A situation to discuss
A route changes because of roadworks, and the learner's phone offers an alternative. Do not interact with it while driving or waiting in traffic. Continue safely under appropriate supervision and re-plan when lawfully parked. Check the current NSW licence restrictions rather than assuming a mounted phone, voice command or hands-free function is permitted. Preparing an alternative route before departure can remove the temptation to solve navigation under pressure.
