Reading parking signs before leaving the car

Parking signs can combine time limits, arrows and conditions that apply only during certain periods. Read them before you leave the vehicle. A space that other drivers are using is not proof that parking is permitted for you.
Understand the situation
Use the NSW parking guidance to understand common restrictions and check the signs at the actual location. Consider where the restriction starts and ends, the current day and time, and whether another nearby sign changes the conditions. If the situation remains unclear, choose another lawful space.
Before you practise
- Read every relevant panel on the sign
- Check the arrows and the section of kerb they cover
- Consider your intended return time as well as arrival
A focused practice session
During a supervised outing, park lawfully and discuss a nearby sign while standing safely away from traffic. Explain the permission in your own words, then compare it with the official guidance. Build familiarity gradually rather than trying to decode a difficult sign while driving.
A situation to discuss
A time-limited parking sign permits a stay when you arrive but another restriction will begin before you plan to return. Consider the whole intended stay, not just whether parking is permitted at the first moment. Read the arrows and adjacent panels carefully. If the meaning remains unclear, use another lawful space. A meter accepting payment is not a reliable explanation of every restriction affecting that particular section of kerb.
