Understanding P R N and D before moving away
An automatic transmission reduces gear-changing work, but selecting the wrong direction can still create danger.
An automatic transmission reduces gear-changing work, but selecting the wrong direction can still create danger. Learn the controls in the actual vehicle you will drive, with the vehicle secured and your instructor beside you.
Understand the situation
The meaning and operation of the selector should be checked in the owner's handbook. Before changing direction, stop fully, keep the vehicle controlled and confirm the selected position. Cameras and warning sounds can support awareness, but they do not replace looking around.
Before you practise
- Locate the selector and read its markings before starting
- Confirm the intended direction before releasing the brake
- Ask how the parking brake works in this particular vehicle
A focused practice session
With the instructor controlling the exercise, practise the preparation sequence while stationary. Say which direction you intend to travel and point to the corresponding selector position. Move only when the instructor has confirmed that the area and setup are suitable.
A situation to discuss
You finish reversing from a permitted space and intend to drive forwards. Pause and bring the car fully to a stop before changing direction under instruction. Confirm the selector position and look around again: the pedestrian situation may have changed during the pause. The selector tells the transmission what you intend; it does not tell you that the space ahead is safe or that the vehicle is secured when you finish.
