An unfamiliar instruction can briefly increase your workload. The safest response is to continue driving safely and ask for clarification when appropriate. A late, abrupt turn can turn a simple misunderstanding into a dangerous decision.

Understand the situation

Practise following directions during ordinary lessons. Make clear that route accuracy never overrides safe observation, positioning or the road rules. If you cannot complete a direction safely, let the situation pass and follow the next instruction rather than attempting a rushed recovery.

Before you practise

A focused practice session

Ask your instructor to give directions on a less familiar route. Discuss any moment when the instruction felt late or unclear while safely parked afterwards. Practise making a calm choice that preserves safety even when the planned turn is no longer possible.

A situation to discuss

You hear a direction to turn, but reaching the turn would require crossing lanes abruptly. Continue driving safely rather than treating the direction as permission to force the manoeuvre. Clarify the instruction when appropriate and let the route be adjusted. Practising that response in lessons makes it easier to separate two tasks: following directions and maintaining the safe driving decisions that still govern every movement.
